The word Reiki means 'universal life force energy'. This corrresponds to the meaning of ki, chi, prana, baraka, light and possibly Ancient Egyptian 'ka'. When we are healthy this life force or subtle energy flows through our bodies unimpeded. In ill-health the energy becomes weakened or blocked and Reiki is said to be able to dissolve such blocks and encourage a natural flow and re-balancing.
Usui Reiki was discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui after many years of study, fasting and meditation. During a profound mystical experience, he saw several symbols glowing in a golden light. Soon after, he realised that he was able to heal by the laying on of hands. These symbols later became the 'attunements" which every Reiki student has imparted to them when taught by a genuine Reiki master. The attunements intensify both the giving and receiving of Reiki energy.
Reiki is taught at three levels with the Master level being the third one. The Master level of Usui Reiki is taught in person by a very experienced Master (male or female) face-to-face and in a small group. This means that there is a chain of transmission all the way down from Dr. Usui himself.
Reiki is a very relaxing experience. The client lies on a massage couch, fully clothed and covered with a light blanket and with meditative music playing in the background. The practitioner passes their hands over the client at intervals, either just above the body or with a light contact. Clients mostly experience a profound rest and peacefulness. Also, at times, movements of internal energy, experiences of colour or light and sometimes slight involuntary body movements (kriyas) are experienced. Reiki can also be offered as distant healing, when the client and practitioner set up a time for the healing transmission.
